Bilirubin
What it measures
Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when red blood cells break down, normally processed by the liver and removed from the body.
Often reported in mg/dL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
Mildly elevated bilirubin is common and often harmless, but is also assessed alongside other liver markers to build a fuller picture.
Questions worth asking
- Should this be checked alongside ALT, AST, and ALP?
- Has anyone in my family had a similar pattern?
- Is further evaluation recommended?
