ALT

What it measures

ALT is an enzyme found mostly in the liver that's released into the blood when liver cells are stressed or damaged.

Often reported in U/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

Mild ALT elevations are common and can relate to diet, alcohol, medications, or exercise, not only liver disease.

Questions worth asking

  • Should this be checked alongside AST and other liver markers?
  • Could recent alcohol use, medications, or supplements be relevant?
  • Is a repeat test recommended before further evaluation?
