ALP

What it measures

Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme found in the liver, bones, and other tissues.

Often reported in U/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

Because ALP comes from multiple tissues, an elevated result is often followed up to determine whether it's related to the liver, bone, or another source.

Questions worth asking

  • Should further testing clarify whether this is liver- or bone-related?
  • Are there recent bone growth, healing, or liver-related factors relevant here?
  • Is a repeat test recommended?
