Ferritin
What it measures
Ferritin stores iron in your body and reflects how much iron you have in reserve.
Often reported in ng/mL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
Ferritin can also rise with inflammation or infection unrelated to iron levels, so it's often interpreted alongside iron, TIBC, and transferrin saturation.
Questions worth asking
- Should this be checked alongside iron, TIBC, and transferrin saturation?
- Could a recent infection or inflammation be raising this result?
- Is iron supplementation or further workup worth discussing?
