Uric acid

What it measures

Uric acid is a waste product formed when your body breaks down purines, found in certain foods and produced naturally by cells.

Often reported in mg/dL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

Elevated uric acid is associated with gout risk but many people with higher levels never develop symptoms, so this result is one factor among several.

Questions worth asking

  • Have I had any joint pain or swelling worth mentioning?
  • Could diet, alcohol, or medications be relevant to this result?
  • Is a repeat test or further evaluation a reasonable next step?
