LDL cholesterol
What it measures
LDL carries cholesterol through your bloodstream and is sometimes called the 'bad' cholesterol because higher levels are linked to plaque buildup in arteries over time.
Often reported in mg/dL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
A single LDL result is one factor among many, including age, family history, and other cardiovascular risk factors, used to think about heart health.
Questions worth asking
- How does this fit with my overall cardiovascular risk factors?
- Would repeating this test or checking a fasting sample change the picture?
- What lifestyle factors are reasonable to discuss first?
