Hemoglobin
What it measures
Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and brings carbon dioxide back to be exhaled.
Often reported in g/dL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
Levels outside the typical range can relate to how well your blood is carrying oxygen. A low result is often looked at alongside hematocrit and red blood cell count rather than on its own.
Questions worth asking
- Should this be checked alongside hematocrit and red blood cell count?
- Could recent blood loss, diet, or hydration be affecting this result?
- Is a repeat test or further workup a reasonable next step?
