C-reactive protein (CRP)
What it measures
CRP is a protein made by your liver that rises when there's inflammation anywhere in the body.
Often reported in mg/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
CRP is nonspecific — it can rise from a minor infection, injury, or many other causes, and doesn't identify where or why inflammation is happening.
Questions worth asking
- Was there a recent illness, injury, or infection that could explain this?
- Would a repeat test after recovery add useful information?
- Is further evaluation needed to identify a cause?
